Titus Welliver's Bosch is all set to return in Ballard season 2. His return is exciting, but it also shows how the Prime Video franchise lost a major opportunity that Reacher's Neagley spinoff missed.
It has been a while since Bosch ended its run on Prime Video, and, even after all these years, no other crime thriller has been able to fill the void it left behind. The show's spinoff, Ballard, still managed to etch its own identity in the genre and gave viewers Titus Welliver's return as Harry Bosch by featuring him in a small part in season 1.
As reports confirm, Ballard season 2 will continue the trend and mark Titus Welliver's return as Bosch. It is hard not to look forward to his return, but it sheds light on the franchise's biggest mistake that Reacher is seemingly avoiding.
Titus Welliver’s Confirmed Return In Ballard Season 2 Feels Bittersweet
Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) in his car looking out the window serious in Bosch
Titus Welliver's brief appearance in Ballard season 1 was a fun reminder of the larger established Bosch universe. Even in season 2, his return will serve a similar purpose and help viewers remember how Welliver played a crucial role in making the franchise so successful.
At the same time, though, his return as Bosch can feel a little forced and highlight how the franchise no longer has the same central presence anchoring it the way the original series once did.
It is hard not to be hyped about Ballard season 2 and Welliver's return in its story. However, every time the actor shows up as Harry Bosch on the screen, it becomes a reminder that the main series has ended its run and will likely never return soon. Since Ballard's primary focus is on its main titular character, Bosch also has significantly less screen time in the series.
This, in turn, leaves one longing for the days when Bosch himself was at the center of the story instead of filling the void the main series left behind. Ballard has proven to be a great show in itself and even its second installment will likely not disappoint.
Considering how Bosch: Legacy left things hanging after ending its run with only three seasons, it is still hard not to crave a proper closure for the Titus Welliver character, which his small appearances in Ballard could never give.
Even when it comes to the upcoming Bosch prequel, titled Start of Watch, viewers will likely experience a similar sense of longing. Because, like Ballard, it will walk through a whole chapter of Harry Bosch's overarching story but will not feature the star most viewers directly associate with the character.
Bosch Ended Before Ballard Started Thriving, But Reacher & Neagley Are Growing Together
Bosch ended its run long before Ballard came into the picture. Owing to this, the two installments of the franchise feel like separate entities instead of one combined unit. Bosch's smaller parts in Ballard give the spinoff a semblance of continuity, but it still feels like its own thing. Thankfully, the Reacher franchise is not taking the same approach.
Both the Neagley spinoff and Reacher season 4 are set to release in 2026.
The Neagley spinoff will likely come out before Reacher season 4, and, like Ballard, it will feature the lead of its parent series, Jack Reacher, in a smaller role. Unlike Ballard, however, the Neagley spinoff will perfectly pave the way for its parent show's next installment.

Unlike Titus Welliver's appearances in Ballard, Jack Reacher's role in the Neagley spinoff show will not merely be a nostalgic callback to what came before. It will, instead, serve more as a solid narrative foundation for what lies ahead for the two leading characters of the franchise.
This approach allows both Reacher and Neagley to grow together and simultaneously expand the overarching franchise. Bosch and Ballard could have done the same, but the hit Prime Video franchise has missed this opportunity.
