General manager Tom Fitzgerald said earlier in the day that the New Jersey Devils need to get used to winning close games. Hosting the Seattle Kraken back on home ice, it couldn’t get any closer than their 3-2 win in overtime on Wednesday.
Cody Glass opened the scoring 54 seconds into the first period, depositing a rebound left on Phillip Grubauer’s doorstep. Dougie Hamilton‘s shot from the point created the opportunity after the Kraken netminder made the initial stop, with Glass in position to tap in the rebound.

Exactly eight minutes after Glass scored, ex-Devils defenseman Adam Larsson gained the slot from the blue line with the puck and rifled a shot past Jacob Markstrom to tie the game, 1-1.
Ben Meyers took a holding penalty early in the second period, sending the Devils to the power play.
Jack Hughes entered the Kraken zone with the puck on his stick and fed Nico Hischier with a cross-ice pass. In a high-danger position, the Devils captain unleashed a snap shot that found twine to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
After New Jersey regained their lead, Glass was whistled for roughing, and the Devils went to the kill. It took just five seconds for Jared McCann to even the score again, depositing a rebound left by Vince Dunn from a shot from the blue line.

Yet, when the third period went scoreless and regulation solved nothing, the Devils, and Kraken went to overtime.
In overtime, the Devils controlled the puck for the majority of 3-on-3 play. Jack Hughes found Nico Hischier in open ice, sprung him for a breakaway, and he scored the game-winner in overtime.
Markstrom made 15 saves on 17 shots, capturing his 12th win of the season.
